Body Language is the language of the body. It is a language where there is no exchange of words. It is a form of non- verbal communication which consists of body, postures, gestures, facial expressions and eye movements. These signals are entirely sent and interpreted at the subconscious level.

Body Language

Body Language can provide clues as to the attitude or state of mind of a person. It may indicate aggression, attentiveness, boredom, relaxed state, pleasure, amusement and intoxication among many other clues. The technique of reading people is used frequently. Mirroring the body language of people indicates that they are understood. This happens majority of the times in an interview. Body Language signals may have a goal, other than communication.

One of the most basic and powerful body language signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others. It can also indicate that the person’s arms are cold. When the overall situation is amicable, it can mean that a person is deeply thinking about what is being discussed. But in a serious or confrontational situation, it will mean that the person is expressing opposition. This is especially so if the person is leaning away from the speaker. A harsh or blank expression often indicates outright hostility (unfriendly behaviour).

Consistent eye contact can indicate that a person is thinking positively of what the speaker is saying. It can also mean that the other person does not trust the speaker enough to take their eyes off the speaker. Lack of eye contact can indicate negativity.
